What does it achieve?
It makes a nice big bag to put all the fantasy elements inside, leaving science as 'science', without distortion and (often) the accompanying (outright) lies. The distortion of science to befuddle the mind of the ignorant in order to manufacture what is basically 'magic', with a veneer credibility through disinformation, really get my goat...
Ooops, that not what you meant is it?
I take the point a warp drive is a warp drive, and there are many ways to explain that away, even if some 'scientific' explanations are not to my liking.
The only problem I foresee is that a radio is known, but what exactly is a warp drive doing? It's easy to say FTL drive, but a warp drive comes with a lot of other concepts, and a lot of flavor. Sooner or later you have to define what it is to know what it can do.
For this discussion I'll try and limit myself to generalizations (like GW ). The specifics I've given can all be dumped, glossed over, or whatever takes your fancy.
Side note: I do like, as you know, splitting science from fantasy; even when in the same setting. It allows me to have hard sci-fi juxtaposed to high fantasy without batting an eyelid. I can answer all the hard questions quickly. If something can be done with good 'ol science, even something in theory, I'll use that and update my views. Real since is pushing back my pseudo-science everyday! I use the same basic theories to explain everything from Doctor Who to Lord of the Rings.
For now: warp drive = FTL drive
I think this can be handled with hard science, stuff that is being worked on right now, and a little theoretical science if absolutely needed. For such habitats I see no need for any 'fantasy' level tech.
By the way, my Ecorium only really work when supported by a larger civilization (be it man or machine). They would fail without external help... eventually.
It's one of the concept for 'Stare in the Abyss', and example is 'Invictonberg'
For your project it might be interesting to dump the fusion power and move towards eco-tech power generation?
