I had the same idea!
One of my early concepts was to incorporate a heart beat monitor line, in an attempt tie the concept of 'warspike' to humanity's need for war and conflict to drive innovation and to bond (huddle) together - even going as far as to superimpose the trace the activity of the industrial military complex and economy to the rise and fall of the displayed pulse, the sharp spike of war and the huge drop thereafter (recession).
Almost analogous to the 'blood of life', or 'total war' concept, (in that we are always gearing up for physical war while conducting business war and political war, and hence the whole 'spheres of war' concept tie in).
We breathe we fight.
Yeah, I plan to flesh out the certain era, and I have a few ideas of my own for a sci-fi.
One of the concepts i came up with for the Philverse fan fiction of Warhammer 40K was the 'Ecopolis' to explain hive worlds. The Ecopolis concepts is all mine and never used by GW, so there is a part of me that would like to develop it as a setting, and one that could unofficially be used as a basis for 40k games too (such as maps for DH)
Due to the speed of WarSpike it could probably work quite well as a 'Space hulk' type of game, and the Ecopolis is like a very large hulk (indeed the Ecopolis design can be transferred to a starship with ease, so it doesn't matter where it is really, the characters could be on a world, a ship and space station - it all looks the same!)
It would be interesting designing a type of 'Space Marine' though I would probably go more 'golem' in a Parasite Eve kinda way Other than that, gangs and lots of them! (gangs would use the tribal model and introduce the fundamentals of the concept before expanding it to other more abstract 'tribal' groupings. All tied to 'Mentality' stat and attitude modifiers)
I was even thinking of drawing up some inverted card building plans for the Ecopolis (basically a pretty inside of a box), for 3D battles in Tactical or mood pieces for RPG (Technique+Politico sphere combo).
Other than that a Renaissance Europe theme may be nice, with a fantasy twist.
